Customize the Right-click menu in Flash | ContextMenuItem Tutorial

Overview:

Flash give publishers the opportunity to customize the right-click menu which pops up in the swf file with a context menu item in actionscript.

ContextMenuItem
ContextMenuItem(caption:String, callbackFunction:Function, [separatorBefore:Boolean], [enabled:Boolean], [visible:Boolean])
Creates a new ContextMenuItem object that can be added to the ContextMenu.customItems array.

Steps:

The menu item has a caption, which is displayed to the user in the right click menu. It also has a a callback function handler by naming the function in the code to be invoked once the menu item is selected. It then has three boolean values which specify whether the item has a separator before it, is enabled, and is visible.

To add a new context menu item to a context menu, you simply create the context menu items and then push them into the customItems array.
You can enable or disable specific menu items, make items visible or invisible, or change the caption or callback handler associated with a menu item at any time.
In the example here the menu items about clearing and rewriting the text are set to toggle each other, so you can’t rewrite the text if it hasn’t yet been cleared and vice versa.

To further customize the context menu flash allows us to hide the built in items in the menu with hideBuiltInItems(). This hides all the built in item from view (except ‘settings’) by setting their visibility to false.

Dynamic Flash Vertical Scrolling Link List with XML

As seen at activeden. I’ve fixed it up a lot and made it much easier to incorporate into your own files.

A link list. Vertically scrolling list of links or just words. Scrolls and wraps automatically and interactively. Reads an external XML file containing just titles and paths and creates an interactive click-able link list!

Mazamedia Splash

The new splash is in effect for Mazamedia’s 5th anniversary!

I just re-vamped Mark Callahan’s splash on his Mazamedia.com
Re-vamped as in made interactive innovative and fun. I was just playing with different effects and wanted to see it in action, so I applied it to Mark’s splash intro. He liked it so much he wanted to put it live on his site. That’s cool with me, thanks Mark.

New Version – The letters are anchored to their spot, but use the mouse to push or nudge them. You can also drag them try throwing them even.

Rollover elastic bounce rezise

Flash experiment that could be used for navigation. Rollover each area and watch them all resize themself to accomodate the growing box. It’s pretty fun to play with.

Pog options are aligned across the top of the bay window, use them to adjust the properties within the bay area. Mix and match until you find your fit. Tag buttons are across the bottom, click to specify the genre of art to display.

Gravity:
Toggle the force of gravity acting on the pogs. Pogs with gravity on will be pulled down and bounce according to mass.
White is on. Black is off.

Spring:
Toggle the spring or elasticity option. Pogs will hinge to a point and orbit that point.
White is on. Black is off.

Grid:
Toggle the grid option. The pogs can either form into an array of pogs or move aimlessly in the space.
White is on. Black is off.

Friction:
Toggle the force of friction acting on the pogs. Pogs with friction will slow down and over time eventually stop.

Net Art Studio examines the current state of artistic practice on the Internet and facilitates the production of new works for networked audiences. The course consists of concurrent research and studio components, joined by critical theory.
The research component, achieved by prepared lectures, readings, and directed group research, surveys the cultural and technological underpinnings of contemporary net art. Key areas include historical discourse (media studies, pre-history of the computer, counter-culture movements), significant works online (independent, collective, curated), and practical technical structure (hardware, software, networks).
The studio component focuses on the creation of prototypes that lead up to a final project that exists on the internet and can be submitted to online ‘galleries’ and new media festivals. Student projects are discussed in group critiques within the context of individual artistic development and contemporary net.art. The studio component will be supplemented as necessary by remedial demonstrations, problem-solving assignments, and individual critique.

Synesthesia | Installation- converting sound to shape and color

synesthesia
1. A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.

Installation. May 2005
I had a microphone feed into the computer and audio from the room changed the display. I displayed a circle related to the voice of the room (pitch relates to size, and volume relates to color). As the viewer/participant speaks or sings or yells they see their voice transformed into colorful movements of varying size. The louder the sound- the colors of these forms brightened. In the background I had a sweeping cascade of colored lines. These would take control if there was no noise in the space.
I plan on making the display available online using personal mics from viewers computers to animate it. Ideally I would want multiple users to be able to log on and effect the animation collectively. Each input will generate shapes.
